ATP Synthasome in Cancer Mitochondria · October 2009

This illustration depicts the functional role of the ATP synthasome in cancer mitochondria whereby it forms the ATP Synthasome (containing ATP synthase) ·VDAC ·HK2 Mega Complex. This megacomplex is theorized to shuttle adenosine triphosphate (ATP) preferentially to the active sites of hexokinase 2 (HK2) which then produces both glucose-6-phosphate, an important building block for cellular biogenesis, as well as excessive amounts of lactate, one of the primary phenotypes of highly-glycolytic cancers. This image was created using 3D software for modeling and rendering, and Photoshop for post-production.
